Essentially a sequel to the free-to-play hit, Chapter 2 included an entirely new map, doing away with the virtual play space players had become accustomed to over the years.
On top of that, new features like boats and swimming were introduced for the first time, and in keeping with a watery theme, fishing was also added.
Far from Fortnite’s usual shooting and looter verbiage, fishing allows players to take some downtime and chill for a moment or two – until a foe gets to jump on you of course.
But it’s not simply a means to take a load off, and has some tactical benefits to the game too, with health giving fish to catch, and weapons to haul out of the game’s rivers.
How do I find a fishing rod?
Before you’re able to fish in Fortnite: Chapter 2, you’ll first need a fishing rod.
The simplest way to find a fishing rod, is to find one of the many barrels scattered across the map that contain one.
These are nearly always placed next to or near to bodies of water, so if you already have a favourite fishing spot scoped out, chances are a barrel full of rods will be close too.
Once you’re next to a barrel, interact with it, and two rods will be placed into your inventory, just as a weapon would.
Failing that, you can also find fishing rods in much the same way as you would weapons and other items in the game: in chests or just lying on the ground.
How do I find a fishing spot?
Fortnite’s new map is strewn with rivers and streams, so you’d think the fishing would never let up as long as you were near to a body of water.
But it’s not quite as simple as that, and within those watery stretches are specific fishing spots where you’ll be able to catch a scaly friend.
Thankfully, those fishing spots are easy to catch sight of, and are represented by a white swirl of water on the surface – there may even be one or two fish jumping about in there.
These spots pop up randomly throughout the water features of the new map, so they won’t be in the same place every match, but if you’re near a river, chances are fish aren’t too far away.
The spots will eventually disappear once you’ve caught all the fish from them.
How do I fish in Fortnite?
To begin fishing you’ll need to have your rod equipped.
Then press and hold the action button, which allows you to pick the height and the length of your cast (you should be aiming for the middle of the fishing location you want to fish in).
Once you’ve lined up the perfect cast, let go of the action button to let go of the rod.
If you miss the mark, simply reel in the line by pressing the action button again and recast, but if you get it just right, all you have to do is wait until you get a catch.
When you do get a catch, this will be represented by a splashing sound, and the end of your line will briefly bob under the water.
To reel in your catch, let go of the action button quickly. It’s random what you might drag up from the watery depths, and could be anything from a fish to a new gun.
Eating the fish you caught will provide you with a boost. For example, the Slurpfish grants a portion of shield.
